During long holidays and peak travel seasons, many people head overseas with plans to bring back gifts. However, there are important rules you should know before bringing items into Thailand. Some items are strictly prohibited, while others require official permission. Failing to comply may result in confiscation or legal penalties.
SAWASDEE by AOT has compiled the latest information from the Thai Customs Department, along with essential tips for all travelers.
Prohibited Items
These are items that are not allowed to be brought into or taken out of the Kingdom. If found, they may be confiscated and subject to legal action.
- Narcotics
- Pornographic materials
- Counterfeit trademark goods, pirated items, and intellectual property–infringing products
- Fake banknotes or counterfeit coins
- Protected wildlife or species listed under the CITES convention
Restricted Items
These items require written permission from the relevant government authority before being brought into or taken out of Thailand. The permit must be presented during customs procedures.
- Buddha images, religious artifacts, and antiques, especially items larger than 13 cm or considered ancient
- Firearms, ammunition, explosives, and gun replicas, which require a permit from the Royal Thai Police
- Plants and any plant parts, including seeds, dried flowers, and fresh fruits
- Live animals and animal remains
- Food, medicine, cosmetics, and dietary supplements in unusually large quantities or for commercial purposes, which require approval from the FDA
- Vehicle parts, such as car components or engines, which require permission from Thai Customs and other relevant agencies
- Cigarettes, tobacco, and alcoholic beverages, which are subject to quantity limits:
- Up to 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco
- Up to 1 liter of alcohol
- Radio communication devices and telecommunications equipment, such as walkie-talkies, which require approval from the NBTC
Other Items That Must Be Declared
Even if the items are not prohibited or restricted, the following must be declared to customs for safety and to avoid penalties.
- Personal belongings valued over 20,000 THB per item
For example, luxury watches, branded handbags, and jewelry may be subject to import tax if they exceed the value limit.
- Goods purchased for resale or in unusually large quantities
Items may be considered commercial and taxed accordingly.
- Cash exceeding 450,000 THB or more than 15,000 USD
This must be declared to comply with anti-money laundering regulations.
